Fight Homophobia – Avoid Heterosexism In Schools
Heterosexism is the assumption that all people are (or should be) physically and emotionally attracted to people of the opposite sex. This rejects all the life experiences of gay, lesbian and bisexual people and gives a real advantage to heterosexual people. Prejudices happen every day. Sometimes they are subtle, such as assuming that someone is heterosexual. Other times they are more blatant physical acts of violence. Either way these are homophobic actions, whether done on the conscious or subconscious level that we should avoid.. This homophobia not only hurts GLBT people, it also hurts heterosexuals. The book, My Two Aunts fights homophobia by educating children at a young age.
Children Are Hurt By Anti-Gay Prejudices
Gay, lesbian or straight all children should be celebrated. Homophobia in schools hurts all children no matter what their sexual orientation. Students walking through the alls of their schools hear and average of 25.5 anti-gay prejudice remarks a day. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, homosexuals are probably the most frequent victims of hate crimes. A National Gay and Lesbian Task Force survey found that 45% of gay men and 20% of lesbians reported being harassed or attacked in high school because they were perceived to be lesbian or gay. These anti-gay prejudices hurt all children.

Eliminate Homophobia In Schools Education
Deb has several elementary level children’s educational programs:
- My Two Aunts: An elementary school assembly that teaches children that two Aunts are better than one. This program teaches young children in a comfortable setting about same-sex relationships to fight homophobia in the school.

- Debbie Banana And The Mad Scientist: A hilarious program that gets the kids roaring! Debbie Banana encourages the kids to eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day and the Mad Scientist shows them what is really in that box of macaroni and cheese! Power tools and fun!
- Safari Deb: Taking the kids on a safari, Deb brings back yard habitat education to your school. Fun animal sounds and a science project to boot.
The high school or middle school programs include:
- Life Is Like Rainbow Jello: This educational program will empower all students to reach for their dreams. Based on Deb’s real life experiences of overcoming challenges this program is a success story for everyone. The journey to achieving a gold medal at the Gay Games brought to your school assembly in an exciting story.
- We Are Who We Are! This school education program is modified to meet your schools needs. It can cover topics like overcoming or combating addiction issues, reducing homophobic behavior in the school and/or acceptance of self.
