I recently was at my niece’s house and she brought out the book My Two Aunts, which I wrote.  The book was written before Brooklyn, who is now six, was born.  She has grown up having her Mom read it to her off and on over the years.   She said “Mommy doesn’t read all the words on this page, Aunt Deb.”  I looked at the page and the words lesbian and gay were on the page.  Brooklyn has had this book read to her many times over and yet her Mom never said the words lesbian or gay.  Now Brooklyn is old enough to read it herself and recognized this.  I asked her to read it to me and she wouldn’t.  So I read it out loud and she was laughing, giggling and covering her eyes when I said the forbidden words that her mother did not mention:  Lesbian – Gay.  If we want equal rights and gay marriage we need to say the words lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual to young people.  When children hear those words in positive ways they will understand that these are not bad words and then equal rights will be around the corner.  Order My Two Aunts-Children's Book
